If the trailer for The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is any indication, Kiernan Shipka’s turn as teenage witch Sabrina Spellman has been going quite well. Then again, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing — at least not for Kiernan’s skin.

In a new interview with Byrdie, the actor said her early days in Vancouver, B.C. where the show films), actually took a toll on her skin.

She attributes these “skin troubles” to a few things: She’s allergic to her feline costar, which caused her to develop hives, and, she says, she had to adjust to “new pollens” in Vancouver. (According to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology, or AAAAI, pollen allergies can indeed cause skin rash flare-ups.)

And then there was the big change in her routine and job. “I think lack of sleep and the physical and mental stress of taking on this giant job made my skin angry,” she said in the interview. Stress and lack of sleep can certainly lead to breakouts and exacerbate existing skin conditions, like eczema and psoriasis.

While it’s important (and helpful) to take steps to reduce stress and catch up on zzzs to battle that kind of “angry” skin, it’s also crucial to stick to a solid skin-care routine — which is what Kiernan has been doing. “I’m all about the skin self-care,” she told Byrdie, admitting it took some time to find her way. “I’d always futzed around with different skin-care regimens but never found something to land on because I was really into natural beauty," she said, "but I never found anything that felt powerful enough or worked.”

Eventually, though, she said discovered the “freaking amazing” brand Marie Veronique. After using their cleanser, face oil, and retinol serum, she said her “skin has never been clearer.”

The actor also confessed her love for masks, including Marie Veronique’s Probiotic+Exfoliation Mask, Beauty Counter’s No. 3 Balancing Facial Mask, and Tata Harper’s Clarifying Mask. “That’s the green one,” she said of the Tata Harper mask. “Very witchy and fun.” How fitting.
